RESUMO

High-acuity trauma necessitates experienced and rapid intervention to prevent patient harm. However, upskilling junior trainees through hands-on management of real trauma cases is rarely feasible without compromising patient safety. This quality education report sought to investigate whether a simulation course operated via mixed reality (MR) headset devices (Microsoft HoloLens) could enhance the clinical knowledge recall and preparedness to practice of junior trainees with no prior experience managing trauma.The Plan-Do-Study-Act quality improvement method was used to refine six emergency trauma vignettes compatible with an MR teaching platform. Each vignette was curated by a multidisciplinary team of orthopaedic surgeons, clinical fellows and experts in simulation-based medical education. As a baseline assessment, a 2-hour emergency trauma course was delivered using traditional didactic methods to a cohort of pre-registration medical students with no clinical exposure to high-acuity trauma (n=16). Next, we delivered the MR simulation to an equivalent cohort (n=32). Clinical knowledge scores derived from written test papers were recorded for each group during and 2 weeks after each course. Each attendee's end-of-rotation clinical supervisor appraisal grade was recorded, as determined by a consultant surgeon who supervised participants during a 2-week placement on a major trauma ward. Balancing measures included participant feedback and validated cognitive load questionnaires (National Aeronautics and Space Administration-Task Load Index).Overall, attendees of the MR simulation course achieved and sustained higher clinical knowledge scores and were more likely to receive a positive consultant supervisor appraisal. This project serves as a proof of concept that MR wearable technologies can be used to improve clinical knowledge recall and enhance the preparedness to practice of novice learners with otherwise limited clinical exposure to high-acuity trauma.

RESUMO

Postgraduate medical education is an essential societal enterprise that prepares highly skilled physicians for the health workforce. In recent years, PGME systems have been criticized worldwide for problems with variable graduate abilities, concerns about patient safety, and issues with teaching and assessment methods. In response, competency based medical education approaches, with an emphasis on graduate outcomes, have been proposed as the direction for 21st century health profession education. However, there are few published models of large-scale implementation of these approaches. We describe the rationale and design for a national, time-variable competency-based multi-specialty system for postgraduate medical education called Competence by Design. Fourteen innovations were bundled to create this new system, using the Van Melle Core Components of competency based medical education as the basis for the transformation. The successful execution of this transformational training system shows competency based medical education can be implemented at scale. The lessons learned in the early implementation of Competence by Design can inform competency based medical education innovation efforts across professions worldwide.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) strongly recommends that brief tobacco interventions should be routinely offered in primary care. However, medical doctors do not consistently and effectively intervene during their encounters with cigarette smokers. There is a paucity of studies assessing the effect of training on the tobacco intervention competency of primary care doctors in Nigeria. AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of online training in improving competency in brief tobacco interventions among primary care doctors in Delta State, Nigeria. METHODS: A cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted among eligible doctors working in government-owned facilities. The 22 eligible Local Government Areas (LGAs) served as clusters. The intervention group received a WHO six-hour online course on brief tobacco cessation intervention, delivered via Zoom. The control group received no intervention. A structured questionnaire was sent to participants via WhatsApp before and six months after the training. The primary outcome variables were scores for knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, and practice. Differences in change of scores between intervention and control groups were assessed with t-test. To adjust for clustering, these inter-group differences were further analyzed using linear mixed-effects regression modeling with study condition modeled as a fixed effect, and LGA of practice entered as a random effect. RESULTS: The intervention group had a significantly higher mean of change in scores for knowledge (effect size 0.344) and confidence (effect size 0.52). CONCLUSION: The study shows that training, even online, positively affects clinician competency in brief tobacco intervention. This is important for primary care systems in developing countries. Mandatory in-service training and promotion of the WHO modules are recommended.

BACKGROUND: Recently, there has been a concerted effort within medical schools to depart from conventional lecture-based learning approaches to alternative teaching methods such as team-based learning (TBL) and problem-based learning (PBL), with the aim of enhancing both student engagement and instructional efficacy. Despite this shift, a comprehensive review that directly compares the impacts of PBL and TBL methods in medical education is lacking. This study seeks to address this gap by conducting a meta-analysis that compares the effects of TBL and PBL in the context of medical education. METHODS: Studies from Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Chinese Wanfang Database were searched, from inception to July 11, 2023. A meta-analysis was performed using Stata 14.0, and a total of 10 studies (including 752 participants) were included. The standardized mean difference (SMD) was used to estimate pooled effects. Heterogeneity was detected using the I2 statistic and further explored using meta-regression analysis. RESULTS: Compared with PBL, TBL significantly increased the number of theoretical tests (SMD = 0.37, 95% CI: 0.02-0.73). Additionally, TBL greatly improved teamwork skills compared with PBL. However, there were no significant differences between the TBL and PBL groups concerning practical skill scores, learning interest, or understanding skills. CONCLUSION: TBL in the theoretical aspects of medical education appears to be more effective than PBL in improving theoretical test scores and teamwork skills, providing evidence for the implementation of TBL in medical education.

PURPOSE: Medical oncology and medical education (ME) have both expanded exponentially over the past 50 years; thus, it is important to understand the current status of postgraduate medical oncology education and develop ways to advance this field. This study undertakes a scoping review of ME literature in medical oncology to inform future scholarship in this area. METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, ERIC, and Web of Science were searched to find peer-reviewed English language articles on postgraduate ME in medical oncology published from 2009 to 2020. Established scoping review methodologies were used in study design; articles were classified by specialty, learner training level, region of authorship, institution type, year of publication, journal type, study methodology, and research topic. Curriculum intervention, scholarship, and domain(s) of physician competency were also assessed. The results were interpreted using descriptive statistics and collated using predetermined conceptual frameworks. RESULTS: A total of 2,959 references were initially found across four databases. After title and abstract screening, 305 articles remained; after full-text review, 144 articles were included in final analysis. Postgraduate medical oncology education research is increasing, with the majority of articles published in North America. Quantitative studies were most common, primarily survey approaches. For physician competencies, professionalism and medical expertise comprised the large majority of article focuses, whereas very few articles addressed leadership or health advocacy. Curriculum development, professional development, and communication skills were dominant research themes while no articles discussed teacher training. CONCLUSION: Although areas such as professionalism and communication skills are well-studied, medical oncology ME research is lacking in leadership, health advocacy, and teacher training. This study provides valuable guidance for future ME research in medical oncology and establishes a benchmark to examine changes in educational scholarship over time.

Introducción: El presente trabajo tuvo como propósito conocer el nivel de resiliencia en contexto pandémico en una muestra de estudiantes de pregrado de ciencias de la salud y cómo ésta se comporta en escenarios de telesimulación. Sujetos y métodos: El estudio tuvo un enfoque cuantitativo, con diseño observacional y temporalidad transversal. Se incluyó a 192 estudiantes pertenecientes a cinco carreras de las ciencias de la salud, cuyas edades oscilaron entre los 20 y los 49 años. Para medir la variable de interés se utilizó el cuestionario de resiliencia adaptado a 44 ítems con respuestas en escalamiento de tipo Likert. Resultados: Los resultados muestran niveles altos de resiliencia en carreras con programas de estudio que incluyen la telesimulación y las diferencias entre cada una de estas carreras. Conclusiones: Se sugiere la ampliación de la línea de investigación en otros contextos situacionales e intervención de metodologías de enseñanza-aprendizaje, con el fin de potenciar los procesos de adaptación de los estudiantes de salud y evaluar competencias esperadas del perfil de egreso, directamente relacionadas con su desempeño en su quehacer profesional.(AU)


Introduction: The purpose of this work was to know the level of resilience in a pandemic context in a sample of undergraduate students of health sciences, and how it behaves in tele-simulation scenarios. The study had a quantitative approach, with observational design, cross-sectional temporality and prospective.Subjects and methods: We included 192 students belonging to 5 careers in health sciences, whose ages ranged between 20 and 49 years. To measure the variable of interest, the resilience questionnaire adapted to 44 items with Likert-type scaling responses was used. Results: The results show high levels of resilience in careers with study programs that include tele-simulation and the differences between each of these careers. Conclusions: It is suggested to expand the line of research in other situational contexts and intervention of teachinglearning methodologies, to enhance the adaptation processes of health students and evaluate expected competencies of the graduation profile, directly related to their performance in their professional work.(AU)

Introducción: El examen de médico interno residente (examen MIR) es la prueba que permite el acceso a la formación médica especializada en España. Su objetivo es distribuir las plazas disponibles para las diferentes especialidades médicas entre los graduados en Medicina, teniendo en cuenta para ello tanto su expediente como los resultados de la prueba. La realización de un examen de test tiene un cierto componente de aleatoriedad.Objetivos: Analizar el rendimiento de las números uno de las convocatorias de 2021-2022 y 2022-2023 a lo largo de su preparación, así como conocer qué resultados podrían obtener en caso de que repitieran el mismo examen un millón de veces. Material y métodos: Se hizo uso de la información relativa al rendimiento de los estudiantes que prepararon las pruebas con cursos intensivos MIR Asturias, así como de los principios de la teoría de respuesta al ítem.Resultados. En 11 (33,3%) y 14 (42,4%) de las 33 pruebas realizadas a lo largo de la preparación, las números uno se clasificaron entre los 10 primeros. A partir de las simulaciones de las pruebas MIR de 2022 y 2023, se obtuvo que la primera clasificada de 2022 quedaría entre los 185 primeros de la prueba, y la de 2023, entre los 92 primeros.Conclusiones: Para obtener un número de orden entre los primeros clasificados es necesario disponer de un ability elevado, el cual se consigue a través de una preparación sólida. Además, el azar tiene un cierto nivel de influencia sobre los resultados de los opositores presentados a la prueba.(AU)


Introduction: The MIR exam is the test that allows access to specialized medical training in Spain. Its objective is to distribute the available places for the different medical specialties among Medicine graduates, taking into account both their record and the results of the test. Taking a test exam has a certain element of randomness.Objectives: Analyze the performance of the number ones of the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 calls throughout their preparation, as well as know what results they could obtain if they repeated the same exam one million times. Material and methods: Information related to the performance of the students who prepared the tests with MIR Asturias Intensive Courses was used, as well as the principles of item response theory.Results. In 11 (33.3%) and 14 (42.4%) of the 33 tests carried out throughout the preparation, number one was classified among the top 10. From the simulations of the 2022 and 2023 MIR tests, it was obtained that the first classified in 2022 would be among the top 185 in the test and in 2023 among the top 92. Conclusions: To obtain an order number among the first classified it is necessary to have a high ability, which is achieved through solid preparation. In addition, randomness has a certain level of influence on the results of the opponents presented to the test.(AU)

Traditional approaches to assessment in health professions education systems, which have generally focused on the summative function of assessment through the development and episodic use of individual high-stakes examinations, may no longer be appropriate in an era of competency based medical education. Contemporary assessment programs should not only ensure collection of high-quality performance data to support robust decision-making on learners' achievement and competence development but also facilitate the provision of meaningful feedback to learners to support reflective practice and performance improvement. Programmatic assessment is a specific approach to designing assessment systems through the intentional selection and combination of a variety of assessment methods and activities embedded within an educational framework to simultaneously optimize the decision-making and learning function of assessment. It is a core component of competency based medical education and is aligned with the goals of promoting assessment for learning and coaching learners to achieve predefined levels of competence. In Canada, postgraduate specialist medical education has undergone a transformative change to a competency based model centred around entrustable professional activities (EPAs). In this paper, we describe and reflect on the large scale, national implementation of a program of assessment model designed to guide learning and ensure that robust data is collected to support defensible decisions about EPA achievement and progress through training. Reflecting on the design and implications of this assessment system may help others who want to incorporate a competency based approach in their own country.

ABSTRACT: Understanding what interventions and approaches are currently being used to improve the knowledge, skills, and effectiveness of instructors in simulation-based education is an integral step for carving out the future of simulation. The current study is a scoping review on the topic, to uncover what is known about faculty development for simulation-based education.We screened 3259 abstracts and included 35 studies in this scoping review. Our findings reveal a clear image that the landscape of faculty development in simulation is widely diverse, revealing an array of foundations, terrains, and peaks even within the same zone of focus. As the field of faculty development in simulation continues to mature, we would hope that greater continuity and cohesiveness across the literature would continue to grow as well. Recommendations provided here may help provide the pathway toward that aim.

The effects of 'stress' within the healthcare professions are wide-reaching, not least of all within the field of simulation-based healthcare education. Whilst this popular method of experiential learning offers a 'safe space' for participants to develop their skillset, it also has a more surreptitious action; namely, the incubation of simulation-related stress. Currently, research concerning the complex relationship between stress, learning, and performance is ambiguous, leaving fertile ground for simulationists to debate what level of stress is appropriate for an optimised educational experience. In this narrative review, we examine the human response to stress and outline the various methods that have been used by researchers to measure stress in a quantifiable and standardised way. We then provide a brief overview of simulation-based healthcare education before describing why stress responses have been of interest to healthcare educationalists for some time. Finally, we outline how simulation education environments might provide an ideal environment for studying the human response to stress generally, with ramifications extending beyond the field of medical education.

Background: General Surgery course is a mandatory in medical schools and continuing surgery training is important even to experienced surgeons which they need to maintain and/or improve their surgical skills. Additionally, the models used for that practice are human cadavers, anesthetized porcine, or simulators and are not accessible for medicine schools or physicians in many countries. Therefore, we present a new technical procedure for preparation of frozen experimental animal's cadavers for medical surgical training. Materials and Methods: To perform the study, one porcine slaughtered and frozen at -20°C was used. The porcine cadaver was thawed at room temperature (25°C) and then the pneumoperitoneum test was performed and viscera inspection carried out. Results: The porcine cadaver took 20 hours to completely thaw. The pneumoperitoneum was successfully performed with total distention of the abdominal cavity. All viscera were well preserved maintaining important in vivo characteristics for consistency. Conclusion: The use of thawed porcine cadaver as a model to train many surgical procedures including videolaparoscopy is feasible. The tissues were well preserved by this method and was financially accessible and could be used for different techniques, equipment, and material tests.

INTRODUCTION: Powerful medical education (PME) involves the use of new technologies informed by the science of expertise that are embedded in laboratories and organizations that value evidence-based education and support innovation. This contrasts with traditional medical education that relies on a dated apprenticeship model that yields uneven results. PME involves an amalgam of features, conditions and assumptions, and contextual variables that comprise an approach to developing clinical competence grounded in education impact metrics including efficiency and cost-effectiveness. METHODS: This article is a narrative review based on SANRA criteria and informed by realist review principles. The review addresses the PME model with an emphasis on mastery learning and deliberate practice principles drawn from the new science of expertise. Pub Med, Scopus, and Web of Science search terms include medical education, the science of expertise, mastery learning, translational outcomes, cost effectiveness, and return on investment. Literature coverage is comprehensive with selective citations. RESULTS: PME is described as an integrated set of twelve features embedded in a group of seven conditions and assumptions and four context variables. PME is illustrated via case examples that demonstrate improved ventilator patient management learning outcomes compared to traditional clinical education and mastery learning of breaking bad news communication skills. Evidence also shows that PME of physicians and other health care providers can have translational, downstream effects on patient care practices, patient outcomes, and return on investment. Several translational health care quality improvements that derive from PME include reduced infections; better communication among physicians, patients, and families; exceptional birth outcomes; more effective patient education; and return on investment. CONCLUSIONS: The article concludes with challenges to hospitals, health systems, and medical education organizations that are responsible for producing physicians who are expected to deliver safe, effective, and cost-conscious health care.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate how medical schools in Korea managed their academic affairs and student support in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and their plans for the post-COVID-19 era. METHODS: An online survey was conducted, and a link to a questionnaire was distributed to all the administrators of the 40 medical schools in Korea. The final analysis data involved responses from 33 medical schools and 1,342 students. Frequency analysis, cross-tabulation analysis, Fisher's exact test, and one-way analysis of variance were applied for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Regarding instruction methods, most medical schools in Korea transitioned from in-person learning to video-on-demand learning (51.5%) and real-time online learning (42.4%). Among the school leaders, 36.4% planned to continue offering online classes combined with in-person classes beyond the end of the pandemic. Among the students, the online class concentration and participation score was 3.0 points or lower, but the class understanding score was 3.6 points, above a moderate level. CONCLUSION: Students cited the shorter times needed to attend school and being able to take classes repeatedly as advantages of online classes, and over one-third of medical schools intended to continue with a hybrid of in-person and online learning even after the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions end.

BACKGROUND: Anatomy is a crucial part of medical education, and there have been attempts to improve this field by utilizing various methods. With the advancement of technology, three-dimensional (3D) materials have gained popularity and become a matter of debate about their effectiveness compared to two-dimensional (2D) sources. This research aims to analyze the effectiveness of 3D PDFs compared to 2D atlases. METHODS: This study is a randomized controlled trial involving 87 Year-1 and Year-2 medical students at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine, Turkey. The study was conducted in two steps. In Step-1, students were randomized to watch lecture videos on liver anatomy and male genitalia anatomy supplemented with either a 3D PDF (intervention group) or 2D atlas (control group) images. Following the video lectures, a test (immediate test) was administered. In Step-2, the same test (delayed test) was administered 10 days after the immediate test. The test scores were compared between the intervention and control groups. In addition to the descriptive analyses, Chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests were performed. RESULTS: In the immediate test, while there was no significant difference between the groups for the liver test (p > 0.05), 3D PDF group's scores (Median = 24.50) was significantly higher than the 2D atlas group's in the genitalia test (Median = 21.00), (p = 0.017). The effect size (Cohen's d) was 0.57. In the delayed test, there was no significant difference between the groups in the liver and genitalia tests (p > 0.05). However, the effect size in the immediate genitalia test was 0.40. Year-1 students' immediate test of genitalia performances were significantly higher in the 3D PDF group (Median = 24.00) than the 2D atlas group (Median = 19.00), (p = 0.016). The effect size was 0.76. Also, Year-1 students' 3D PDF group (Median = 20.50) presented with significantly higher performance than the 2D atlas group (Median = 12.00), (p = 0.044) in the delayed test of genitalia, with the 0.63 effect size. CONCLUSION: 3D PDF is more effective than 2D atlases in teaching anatomy, especially to initial learners. It is particularly useful for teaching complex anatomical structures, such as male genitalia, compared to the liver. Hence, it may be a valuable tool for medical teachers to utilize during lectures.

Introducción: la pandemia de COVID-19 indujo un cambio en nuestro sistema de salud y de educación. Los programas formativos también tuvieron que adaptarse y exigieron un cambio rápido. Objetivos: describir una experiencia educativa de enseñanza virtual/híbrida en investigación clínica, entre docentes del Servicio de Clínica de un hospital universitario y estudiantes de Medicina de una institución privada, que participaron del Programa ESIN (EStudiantes en INvestigación). Metodología: los contenidos y las estrategias educativas incluyeron las clases teóricas audiograbadas o videograbadas (asincrónicas y autoadministradas), el aprendizaje basado en proyectos, los talleres prácticos (encuentros sincrónicos virtuales y grupales), mediante la adopción de modelos de aprendizaje como el aula invertida, y la tutoría individual entre docente-estudiante. Los datos se recopilaron mediante la observación en contextos académicos, y basándonos en elementos de encuestas anónimas de satisfacción, previo consentimiento informado de los participantes. Resultados: participaron 14 estudiantes, 6 durante el año 2021 y 8 durante 2022. Todas mujeres y estudiantes de medicina (50% de cuarto año, 35% de sexto año y 15% de quinto año). Las técnicas implementadas favorecieron la participación y promovieron el aprendizaje activo, basado en proyectos. Mencionaron aspectos positivos como el enfoque académico práctico, la disponibilidad del equipo docente para atender cualquier duda, el tiempo y el entusiasmo por enseñar y fomentar la participación. Los videos teóricos resultaron útiles como herramientas de repaso, y los encuentros grupales fueron especialmente valorados, si bien los encuentros individuales fueron destacados como ayuda y apoyo previo a los congresos científicos. En general, manifestaron que fue una experiencia enriquecedora que demostró que se puede lograr lo que se creía imposible. Todas participaron activamente de al menos un congreso científico, y el 50% resultó coautora de una publicación académica. Conclusión: los estudiantes asumieron compromisos y responsabilidades, e incorporaron competencias y habilidades en la implementación y en la difusión de los proyectos. Esta experiencia educativa facilitó que el tiempo de clase pudiera optimizarse para intercambio, discusión y dudas. Los recursos producidos, las actividades desarrolladas y los contenidos abordados quedan disponibles a nivel institución. (AU)


Introduction: the COVID-19 pandemic brought about a change in our health and education system. Training programs also had to adapt and required rapid change. Objectives: to describe an educational experience of virtual/hybrid teaching in clinical research between teachers of the Clinical Service of a university hospital and medical students of a private institution who participated in the ESIN Program (Students in Research). Methodology: the contents and educational strategies included audio or videotaped lectures (asynchronous and self-administered), project-based learning, practical workshops (virtual and group synchronous meetings) by adopting learning models such as the inverted classroom, and individual tutoring between teacher and student. We gathered the data through observation in academic contexts and based on elements of anonymous satisfaction surveys, with prior informed consent of participants. Results: fourteen students participated, six in 2021 and eight in 2022. All were women and medical students (50% fourth year, 35% sixth year, and 15% fifth year). The techniques implemented favored participation and promoted active, project-based learning. They mentioned positive aspects such as the practical academic approach, the availability of the teaching team for any doubts, the time and enthusiasm for teaching, and encouraging participation. The theory videos were a valuable review tool, and team meetings received high praise even if the one-on-one meetings received much attention as help and support before the scientific congresses. In general, they stated that it was an enriching experience that showed that you can achieve what you thought impossible. All of them actively participated in at least one scientific congress, and 50% were co-authors of an academic publication. Conclusion: the students assumed commitments and responsibilities and incorporated competencies and skills in project implementation and dissemination. This educational experience helped to optimize class time for exchange, discussion, and doubts. The resources produced, the activities developed, and the contents addressed are now available at the institutional level. (AU)

CONTEXT: Effective clinical medical student education includes attention to teaching approaches. This study assessed the impact of a new multi-element teaching mode that utilizes Bite-Sized Teaching, flipped classroom, and MOOC on learner perception in an Obstetrics and gynaecology clerkship. METHODS: A Two-stage crossover design study was conducted of a multi-element teaching mode compared to traditional teaching mode in an academic year. Participants included Ninety-six medical students practicing obstetrics and gynecology in our hospital, randomly divided into two groups respectively underwent multi-element teaching mode and traditional teaching mode. After each semester, a final test (including theoretical and clinical practical test) was conducted.When an academic year was completed, post intervention survey assessed learner perceptions of the intervention. RESULT: In order to comprehensively test students' performance after study, we take theoretical and practical examinations. The theoretical examination mainly tests students' grasp of basic knowledge points, while the practical examination focuses on the examination of students' diagnosis and treatment of diseases. There were statistically significant differences both in the theoretical and clinical practical scores between the new multi-element integrated teaching mode and the traditional teaching mode, specifically as follows: In the end of first semester, the theoretical scores of the two groups were respective 43.75 ± 3.42 vs. 42.07 ± 2.90, and clinic practical test scores were respective 44.93 ± 2.42 vs. 43.37 ± 2.52; In the end of second semester, the theoretical scores of the two groups were respective 44.30 ± 2.69 vs. 42.25 ± 3.39, and clinic practical test scores were respective 43.79 ± 2.25 vs. 41.93 ± 2.80.(p < 0.05). The results of questionnaires demonstrated that 80.21% of the students showed preference for the new multi-element integrated teaching mode comparing to traditional teaching methods. CONCLUSION: The new multi-element integrated teaching mode is well accepted by the students and can improve the students' mastery of knowledge, and can improve the students' clinical comprehensive ability. The new multi-element integrated teaching mode is shown more preference than traditional teaching mode in the teaching of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Further long term study is needed carried out to consolidate our conclusion. The new multi-element integrated teaching mode may have positive effects on clinical teaching of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

PURPOSE: The process of screening and selecting trainees for postgraduate training has evolved significantly in recent years, yet remains a daunting task. Postgraduate training directors seek ways to feasibly and defensibly select candidates, which has resulted in an explosion of literature seeking to identify root causes for the problems observed in postgraduate selection and generate viable solutions. The authors therefore conducted a scoping review to analyze the problems and priorities presented within the postgraduate selection literature to explore practical implications and present a research agenda. METHOD: Between May 2021 and February 2022, the authors searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, ERIC, and Google Scholar for English language literature published after 2000. Articles that described postgraduate selection were eligible for inclusion. 2,273 articles were ultimately eligible for inclusion. Thematic analysis was performed on a subset of 100 articles examining priorities and problems within postgraduate selection. Articles were sampled to ensure broad thematic and geographical variation across the breadth of articles that were eligible for inclusion. RESULTS: Five distinct perspectives or value statements were identified in the thematic analysis: (1) Using available metrics to predict performance in postgraduate training; (2) identifying the best applicants via competitive comparison; (3) seeking alignment between applicant and program in the selection process; (4) ensuring diversity, mitigation of bias, and equity in the selection process; and (5) optimizing the logistics or mechanics of the selection process. CONCLUSIONS: This review provides insight into the framing and value statements authors use to describe postgraduate selection within the literature. The identified value statements provide a window into the assumptions and subsequent implications of viewing postgraduate selection through each of these lenses. Future research must consider the outcomes and consequences of the value statement chosen and the impact on current and future approaches to postgraduate selection.

Background/Introduction: The pathology specimen reception is fundamental to the services provided by Biomedical Science laboratories worldwide. To ensure patient safety and that samples are of adequate quality to send for analysis, prospective Biomedical Scientists should have a robust knowledge of the processes involved and the acceptance criteria of the pathology specimen reception. This knowledge has been highlighted by employers as a current gap in Biomedical Science graduates and therefore needs to be addressed within higher education settings. To do this, this study aimed to 1) design a practical session to simulate the key processes of the pathology specimen reception and 2) to understand Biomedical Science students' opinions on these activities and the development of transferable skills required for post-graduate employment. Methods: The practical session was designed based on industrial requirements and academic knowledge of student skill sets to ensure suitability. Qualitative information regarding participant demographics and career interests was acquired through open-answer or multiple-choice questions. Quantitative student feedback was acquired via questionnaires utilising a 5-point Likert scale (n = 77). Results: The scenario-based practical session provided students with a positive learning experience with 98.7% of participants enjoying the session, with 87.0% stating they learned a lot by completing the session. It was also identified that participants preferred this style of learning to that of conventional higher education teaching modalities with 97.4% stating they would prefer simulated employment focussed scenarios embedded into the curriculum more often. The majority of participants also thought this session was helpful for the development of their key transferrable skills including teamworking, communication, and confidence. When stratified based on demographic data, there was minimal difference between cohorts and in the majority of cases, those participants from non-traditional university entry backgrounds had a more positive experience and better transferable skill development following the completion of this style of learning experience. Conclusion: This study highlights simulation-based learning as a tool to develop core Biomedical Science knowledge, build student graduate capital, and ensure the preparedness of students for post-graduation employment.
